Many people have various doors leading to the front, back, and garage of their homes. These doors all have locks for added protection. Some homeowners even decide to make their locks fit one master key. So why have one key for all locks? Well, there are pros to having one master key, but there are also cons. Read on to find out what those are.

Pros of Master Keys

There are several master key pros and cons. First, let’s discuss some benefits of having all keys made into one master key. The most common reason many homeowners use one master key for all doors leading into their homes is for simple convenience.

Many people dislike carrying several keys in addition to work and vehicle keys on one keychain. Not only is this inconvenient, but carrying all of these keys can be quite heavy. Furthermore, you will have to label all your keys, so you will already know which keys go to which door.

The hassle can easily be eliminated by turning all your keys into one master key.

Cons of Master Keys

There are also several cons to using one master key in your home. For instance, you may want to give your neighbor access to your porch area to leave a package for you. But, you may not feel comfortable giving them access to walk into your home while you are not there.

Additionally, it is possible that you could lose your key. If you lose your master key, all locks in your home will have to be rekeyed to keep someone from entering your home if that key is later found.

Sometimes, it may not even be possible for a locksmith to make all the locks in your home alike. For example, you may have locks of different types or brands. In this case, you will be forced to have several keys unless you plan on replacing the locks altogether.

Fortunately, you do have options. You may want to consider installing keyless entry locks for all doors. Even though they are most commonly used in commercial buildings, they can also be installed in your residence. Keyless entry locks are opened by simply inserting a code, key fob, or access card. Now you can eliminate the hassle of carrying several keys with you at once.

Final Word

There are advantages and disadvantages to obtaining a master key for your home. The biggest benefit is making your life more convenient by carrying one master key instead of one key ring with several keys. But, you will still need to decide whether you feel comfortable giving another person full access to your home with a master key. Ultimately, you will need to decide whether all the locks in your home should be rekeyed if you happen to lose your master key.
