Locked Out of the Office? How To Pick an Office Door Lock

If you have been locked out of your office, the first thing that may come to your mind is to pick the lock. However, you shouldn’t do this if you have not been given the proper permission by the owner to do so. You also shouldn’t do this if you are unsure of what you are doing, as you may cause damage to the lock. If you are locked out of office door and have been given the okay to pick the lock, there are a couple of methods you can try to do this.

Lock Picks

This method will go entirely smoothly for you if you use lubrication. Since many commercial property managers fail to keep up with lock maintenance, certain office door locks may require a lot of force to turn. This can make it even more difficult to pick.

However, if you have lubrication handy, you can try to apply it to the openings within the lock and moving parts, including the latch, bolt, and keyway. Anything that will get hung up should always have some lube prior to picking the lock.

Only use a door lock lubricant instead of something oil-based. Oil attracts dirt which can create further issues later on.

Traditional lock picking tools are often known as lock picks. If you have no access to purchase a lockpick, you can actually make your own. You can use a tension wrench and the pick to unlock your office door. These tools are designed to move all the pins at once.

However, if you are making lock picks out of things such as bobby pins or paper clips, it will be harder to pick the lock.

When picking the lock, make sure to avoid moving the pick too hard or using this method too much. This can damage or break the lock. Additionally, if the office door uses security pins, this method will not work.

Lock Shims

You can also use a lock shim if you are dealing with an office lockout. A shim is a thin material that can be used to slide between two components. When used to unlock an office door, the shim will easily slide into a crevice to create a spring-loading locking mechanism. However, you can only use a flexible and slender shim. It cannot be fragile or brittle.

Many people use things such as a credit card to slide between the lock and door frame. Since this method will damage the lock, it can only be used once. Credit cards that are active shouldn’t be used. If your office door is secured with a padlock, you need to find something other than a credit card to use.

Keep in mind that this method will not work on latches or deadbolts that have anti-shim protections. The only way it will work is if the door has a spring-loaded locking pawl that can be depressed.
