In 1995, Mercedes introduced the first modern-style key fob, and BMW quickly followed suit. Not only could the driver lock and unlock their car remotely, they could also start the car with a push of a button.

Newer innovations

Of course, BMW didn’t stop there. They also came up with new features based on the key fob technology. For example, the “comfort access system” allowed drivers to walk up to their car, open the door and start the engine with a push of a button, rather than have to pull their keys out of their pocket or purse. Around the same time, they added programmable driver settings and other similar features.

Today, the F series and the 7 series still use this remote access technology. Drivers simply need to be in close proximity to their car in order to get in and start the engine. They even offer key fobs with touchscreens, for a fully customizable experience.
